Gold Nuggets In New Hampshire

Wild Ammonoosuc River NH

Hello to everyone interested in Gold Prospecting in
New Hampshire.

Yes there is gold In New Hampshire, Surprised! I was when I found out. I was collecting fossils down south, and when I moved to NH I found out there was no fossils, I had to find a new hobby. I was poking around on the internet and boom there it was, find gold in NH. Since then I found out there is not alot of information about prospecting in NH. So I'm going to in the next few weeks sit down and write Tips,Tricks and locations for finding gold in New Hampshire. New Hampshire has many brooks, rivers and streams to start your adventure.
3-5-2009 UPDATE
So I was up on the Wild Ammonoosuc on this past thursday, Yes the river was covered in snow and Ice. However after walking the edge of the river for a few hundred feet "very dangerous could fall thru ice if not carefull" I found a spot where there was no Ice. It was perfect I could dig some dirt out of this hole. There was a nice rock that I was able to dig under and pull out 2 five gallon buckets worth of dirt. Well lugging the dirt back to my truck was no easy task, deep snow and they were heavy. I got a chance to check the river out, boy it looks different in the winter. The Ice and snow rides a foot or so higher then the water, making the river like a ice cave. As I looked around I could remember how much fun I had there last summer and How I really could not wait for all the snow to melt to get going again this summer. So I packed up my dirt and was on my way home, about a 2 hour ride south of here.
So on my way home I was wondering if there was any gold in the dirt I just gathered. I figured I would go home and fill a wheel barrel full of water, and then use my gold pan in the water to pan out the dirt. Well I got home and filled the wheel barrel up and started panning. To my surprise after panning the 2 buckets worth of dirt, there was some gold. Now it wasn't alot but there was 10 little specs hanging out near the edge of my blue gold pan. I was surprised because it wasnt like I could of dug dirt from any location of the river, it was frozen. So I had a big smile on my face, that I had just found some gold in the winter time in New Hampshire. Now I got this idea of winter prospecting from a guy on youtube who was doing this in alaska. If you do this becarefull and use your head, you don't want to fall thru the ice or get trapped and no one around to help you out.

    3. You can get a sluice on ebay, I heard theres laws regarding the use of sluice boxes in NH, I guess the water cant be owned but the river bed is property of the the land owner so to dig a hole to gather material to feed through the sluice is against the law. You may want to look it up, Im pretty sure that as long as you get permission from the land owner your in the clear, but im not sure cause it also mentioned something about disturbing the eco system of the river by sturing up setiments. Just cover all your bases first, I don't want to see anyone get into trouble. Nathan Tate

  4. I was just up there on the Wild Am and did ok for the 2 days I spent knee-deep in the water. We did give Tunnel Brook a try but it was not what I had hoped. Best results were just upstream from the campground there on Wild Am. As for the campground - we got a cabin and it was very nice, and the folks that run the place are super folks.

    1. You should really have permission from the land owner befor going on thir property

      Delete
  9. A "property owner" can simply own "real" property in NH - real property defined as land, buildings and all rights below/above them. Waterways, I believe, are public property in NH... that is unless you own all access points (land surrounding) the waterway, pond, or lake. This is why you need to receive permission from a landowner to cross their land on the way to a waterway... otherwise you're trespassing on their land as you cross it. Who owns the gold in a waterway... to my knowledge, those rights are determined by the State. NH has determined that that gold panning is permitted in NH waterways, therefore providing to the public "simple rights" to it's contents, example "the fish" (though a daily limit) by methods of fishing. Hope the info is helpfull... you may want to check with a Realtor to verify "property rights" in NH.

    1. All minerals in a stream are owned by the land owner of the land that is beside the river. The water and fish are the states, but the minerals are not, that goes for VT and NH. So that is why you NEED permission, with no permission you are technically steeling the land owners minerals. All this info is in the states prospecting gold download.

  10. Hello everyone!
towards the end of the summer I have started to pick up the side hobby of scouring the rivers and streams for some decent colors. I am in southern NH (Sandown) and have been looking to test the grounds around the local area, instead of making a rather long trip up north. To my surprise with some study you can locate some small amounts in local rivers ( such as the Exeter river, with a little patience). What's a hobby without a little devotion eh? I found that when looking to pick a spot for the future, try and visit it during a day when there is some decent overflow. During this overflow look for spots that are on the inside of a bend and plan for when the water receeds a little bit. Best of Luck!

  11. Need to clarify statements made earlier about private property and who owns the gold. The property above the camp ground is private property and the land owner owns both sides and the bed of the river. I checked with N.H. DES and they stated any minerals extracted from private property, like this one, belongs to the property owner. They said, the property owner will more than likely give you permission to prospect there, but you have to ask and I believe you have to have written permission.

  13. Although there are public waters in the state of NH the Wild Ammonoosuc is not classified as public waters. Land under a stream that is not public is owned privately and you need permission in these cases. Don't be fooled, do your research. Even in the White Mountain National Forest there are private land holdings. Rail Ghost

The other thing to look for is The Nutmeg (CT) Chapter of the GPAA is planing a get together At Twin Rivers Campground, Bat NH over the Summer. The Nutmeg chapter has a website. 23. Went up to the Wild Am last weekend. We stayed at Twin Rivers campground and had a blast! The folks at the campground were amazing and I highly recomend staying there. We did some digging met a few other people prospecting who were very frendly and helpful. It was my first time out and with the help of the people I met and a guy who let me borrow a small sluice box I found some gold! Not much but it was something.

Headed back up next weekend 6/4-5 with a new sluice box. We only went by the campground as it lookes like most of the river is posted. If any one knows of other areas that are ok let me know.

  35. if one is panning for gold would using a metal dector work? i new some people years ago that used a simple metel dector and have found gold.
and another way that is supposed to work is take a 12 inch fishing line and tie one end to a small baloon and put 3 small crimp on fishing weights to it and let it float down the stream and watch where it stops. i presume lead has simular spacific gravity as gold.
where do you take the gold to sell it Or cash it in? WHAT GOOD IS IT TO HAVE ALL THAT GOLD WHEN THEIR IS NOPLACE TO SELL IT (DON,T SUGGEST CASH FOR GOLD) I HAV TRIED ALL THE JULREY SHOPS IN LACONIA AND GILFORD , ETC ,ETC ,THEY MIGHT TAKE ONLY JEWELRY GOLD NOT THE REAL STUFF ALL I HEAR IS CAN,T BE BOTHERED TO ASSEY IT. SO WHAT INFO CAN YOU SEND MY WAY TO MAKE IT WORTH PANNING FOR.?

His wife still wears a piece of quartz with gold stringers in it that came from a vein on that farm. I would dig into crevices in bedrock in any stream in eastern MA and pan out the scrapings. However, I found a few flakes in a stream in Ossipee ( don't know the name of the stream though) Also, in Wakefield there is an old quarry/ mica mine known as the Weeks Mine on Pickpocket Road. If you Google it you should find info on it. There is quartz , beryl, mica, maybe some tourmaline. Across the street there is a hill known as Mineral hill, it's posted I think, but there rumor is there was gold and silver found at one time somewhere on the hill. There are also some old silver mines in Acton, you'll find some quartz with silver in it if you look hard enough. I wouldn't expect to make a dining room set though... Hope this helps

I think I have finally decided on a "contraption" that will work for me...we'll see how it works in practice, but I think I'm gonna focus on "efficiently categorizing" out in the field and bring the conectrates back to camp (or the garage) for refined sluicing for flour/placer gold.

Can't wait for Spring, have a camping trip planned already up near the Ammonoosuc.

  58. Nice to see all of the relevant (NH) posts. Have had gold fever since I spent some years in Colorado gold country. Brought my enthusiasm back to my home here in the Mount Washington Valley. Just ordered a nice sluice box last night, and am already itching for opportunities to wash some gravel. This year I'm starting near Ossipee, and Dixville Notch. Might even try some of my favorite fishing pockets in Pinkham and Crawford Notches. Traces of gold are almost everywhere. The Appalachian Mountains are ancient compared to the Rockies, and one needs to be clever when guessing at spots, study topo maps and imagine where the glaciers made the cuts. Check streams in Rumney too, I've had luck there.

I love to talk gold with others that have the bug.

    1. I've bought one, and used it last year. It does do a good job, but will be using it mostly to clear the last bit off of the bedrock layer. If you do buy one may I recommend buying a few spare seals/leather rings. They dry out, and don't work as well after they are re hydrated. The grease o wax used on the leather seals also leaches out and forms into black greasy balls about the size of peas and bbs. I can't believe that grease (like oil) would be a good thing to mix with gold bearing material as it causes gold to float. After running several dozen five gallon buckets through it, and cleaning the grease from the inside of the unit it settled into a smooth operating tool.
Hope this helps. (P.S. You will find using one of these, that it is HARD work. Just a few hours of moderate use will tire anyone out.)

  122. Hello all-I'm new here and to prospecting. I'm located in central Vermont area. I know Plymouth is a big location around here but want to find my own hole somewhere. I don't really care how much I find as long as it is my find. I've been searching streams and rivers around here and have found zero color which is sort of surprising given Irene. I might need to venture further from home. Anyone out there know what brooks have color over here? I've looked all over and Stowe is out of the question. I've been over to the Braintree area and Roxbury with zero color. I've been 3 feet down under rocks and under tree roots and grass roots. I even found a nice bedrock crack that had nothing. Any help over here would be appreciated. I have located a lot of black sand - my magnets are bombarded with iron fragments.

It took me 45 mins. to find it, with a lot of beautiful(red and purple) garnet and Quarts. I heard where you find garnet, you find gold!!! I'll see you guys up north this spring. Good luck, I don't need it. I have a nose for Nuggets!!!!!
